Ilhan Omar Shamelessly Exploits Tragedy To Push Her Agenda

Speaking on CNN’s The Source this week, Omar repeated familiar Democrat talking points about gun control, arguing that only sweeping federal legislation can prevent further tragedies. She painted America as uniquely unsafe compared to other nations and suggested that without drastic measures, the cycle of violence will continue.
“This is a question we’ve asked ourselves since Columbine, since Sandy Hook,” Omar told host Kaitlan Collins. She went on to claim that tragedies happen “when we allow guns to be accessible in the easy way that it is in the United States.” According to Omar, the problem isn’t cultural or moral decay—it’s the presence of firearms in civilian hands.
Omar insisted that the issue can’t be handled at the state or local level, declaring that “constantly having these conversations on a local level or state level and not having them on a national level creates loopholes for people who are deranged to explore.” She framed federal legislation as the only way forward, warning her colleagues that “partisanship is not saving our children.”
The rhetoric is nothing new for Omar, who has long positioned herself as one of the most vocal advocates for gun restrictions in Congress. What is notable, however, is the timing. Just days after reports confirmed the Minnesota shooter identified as transgender, targeted a Catholic school, and left behind a disturbing online manifesto filled with anti-Trump and anti-Christian screeds, Omar sidestepped the motives behind the attack and pivoted to advancing Democrat policy goals.
Critics argue this is part of a well-worn strategy on the left: seize on horrific crimes to push for sweeping gun control measures, regardless of the facts. The same pattern unfolded after Sandy Hook, Parkland, Uvalde, and countless others. The perpetrators, their backgrounds, and their ideologies often become secondary to the Democrats’ preferred solution—disarming law-abiding Americans.
Omar’s appeal for “common sense” legislation masks the reality that Democrats’ proposals often go far beyond basic safety. They include federal bans on popular firearms, national registries, limits on magazine capacities, and expanded red-flag laws that critics warn would trample constitutional rights.
The congresswoman’s insistence that America is “uniquely” dangerous because of gun availability also ignores another uncomfortable truth: violent crime has skyrocketed in cities with the strictest gun control laws, including Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. In many of those cases, it is lenient prosecutors and failed leadership—not legally owned firearms—that contribute to the chaos.
Meanwhile, conservatives argue that the true solution lies not in taking away rights but in reinforcing security at vulnerable locations like schools and churches, addressing mental health concerns, and restoring accountability for criminals. Breitbart Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow, for instance, has stressed the importance of re-opening asylums for the mentally ill, diagnosing gender confusion as a disorder, and ensuring more trained security personnel are present in schools.
Omar’s comments also fit into a broader Democrat narrative that seeks to federalize as many issues as possible. By claiming that local and state efforts “create loopholes,” she lays the groundwork for sweeping Washington control over gun ownership—something her party has wanted for decades but never been able to fully achieve.
For now, Omar says she will call on her colleagues to “put differences aside” and pass federal restrictions when Congress returns. But her demand comes at a time when Americans are already distrustful of Washington overreach and when many believe their Second Amendment rights are under attack.
The Minnesota tragedy is heartbreaking, but once again Democrats are attempting to turn grief into political leverage. Omar’s call for national gun laws is less about saving children and more about seizing an opportunity to advance her party’s long-standing gun control agenda.
