President Donald Trump is weighing in on one of the biggest debates in modern sports—calling for the return of legendary team names like the Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Indians.

In comments made during a discussion about the potential for a new stadium deal in D.C., Trump made clear that he supports restoring the historic team names that have been erased in recent years to appease the woke mob.

“The Indian population is a great part of this country, great heritage,” Trump said. “I think it’s degrading to the Indian population [to remove those names]… they like when they’re called by various names.”

Trump referenced the 2016 Washington Post poll showing that 90% of Native Americans were not offended by the name “Redskins,” a figure that blew up the left’s narrative that the team name was broadly offensive.

For the 45th president, it’s not just about sports—it’s about cultural pride and historical integrity. “These names weren’t created to insult anyone,” Trump said. “They were tributes. And the people who are honored by them know that.”

The controversy over names like “Redskins” and “Indians” erupted in recent years, with team owners under pressure from corporate sponsors and activist groups. In 2020, Washington’s NFL team dropped the Redskins name, only to stumble through several lackluster rebrands before settling on “Commanders”—a name that left much of the fanbase unimpressed.

Likewise, Cleveland’s MLB team caved to the woke agenda by dropping “Indians” and rebranding as the “Guardians,” prompting widespread backlash and confusion.

Now Trump says it’s time to reverse course and listen to the people—not the activists.

“The fans didn’t ask for this,” Trump said. “The communities these teams represent didn’t ask for this. The politicians and the media did it for them. And that’s wrong.”

The issue is more than symbolic for Trump, who hinted that the Redskins name could return as part of a broader push to secure a new stadium in D.C. That project is still in the works, but insiders say Trump’s support for the original name could put pressure on the franchise’s leadership to reconsider.

With Trump’s backing and strong polling showing continued support for classic team names, the debate may be far from over.

And while the left continues to melt down over every flagpole, statue, and sports logo, Trump’s message is resonating with the very people the names were supposed to honor.

As one X user posted alongside a clip of Trump’s remarks: “He’s the only one saying what fans actually think. Bring back the Redskins. Bring back the Indians. Enough with the nonsense.”

The pressure is on. And as Trump might say: Do the right thing, D.C. Do the right thing, Cleveland.
